On Friday afternoons during 7th period, as most students head downstairs to the cafeteria, a few girls head straight to Room 425 for a weekly My Sister’s Keeper meeting; the all girls club (with a few committed male members) known as MSK. I myself decided to attend one of these meetings to get a better sense of how this club operates. As soon as I walk in I am greeted by Ms. Trishawna, the MSK advisor, and Alesha Arjune, the 11th grade captain. I was quickly welcomed into the club even though I was there for just interview purposes. The co-captain and captain were very open to me asking about the things they do. MSK was organized by our superintendent wanting to form a club for girls to be supported in our school.
Ms. Trishawna echoed similar sentiments to those of the superintendent in that the club allows young female students to form a community of support and encouragement at The Academy for Young Writers. During my time visiting the club I can tell you that the club members support each other by listening to when one speaks or bringing snacks for the members. One of the goals of the club is to have more girls in the club as well as host more fundraisers to pay for the club’s expenses. Ms. Trishawna also expressed that one of her main goals is for the members to take on more leadershipin club affairs and meetings.
11th grader Sarah Yisrael, a member of MSK, was asked what made her want to join this club and how she felt about the student leaders running it.
“I wanted to do something different, and they [MSK captain and co-captain] are doing well and they actually put effort into MSK,” stated Sarah.
One of the fundraisers that the club had at the time this article was written was the Santa Workshop Holiday Gift Ornaments which is a fundraiser for the club where you can order sweet filled ornaments to be delivered to friends and teachers along with gift wrapping services. The sweet filled ornaments were selling for around the price of $3-4 dollars.
One of the events that are always looked forward to by the school community is the MSK Valentine’s day candy grams. 11th grade Captain Alesha Arjune explained how this annual event aids in raising school spirit.
“I think candy grams created an exciting and very embracing environment for everyone because they are talking about crushes and just supporting each other in general. It is such a sweet and endearing environment,” Alesha said.
On the regular, there are around twenty girls that come to MSK’s weekly meetings not including seniors, so if you’re interested in joining MSK go to the science lab room (Rm 425) on Fridays during lunch and you will find a community of supportive and optimistic girls.
