Do you know 11th grader Alesha Arjune? A leader, scholar, and friend to many here at The Academy for Young Writers. She is involved in a number of groups including NHS (National Honor Society), captain of MSK (My Sister’s Keeper), and a peer leader in the school’s Peer Leadership program.

Alesha is someone that cannot stay in one place for long. You will see her in one spot one minute and somewhere completely different the next. However, Alesha is always there when you need a hand. Alesha is a high achieving student who always earns all A’s, and could never be satisfied with anything lower even in her AP college level classes. The people around her see her as a cool and amazing person and her teachers see her as a model student.

When I sat down with Alesha to interview her I did so with a purpose to know what makes Alesha who she is. I first asked her what it is like being a club leader for MSK, (My Sister’s Keeper).

“I’ll be so super duper honest. I find it really fun. I enjoy taking this kind of leadership role, because I never really took leadership roles like this before. And it’s just interesting because I have to do all these things that I already do on a norm that I just really enjoy, like all the exciting things for you girls to see and or to learn about. I just like hanging out with you guys on that more intimate level.”

From her response Alesha seems to love what she is doing. Having a big responsibility like this makes everything exciting for her.

As the interview went on she talked about how she likes coming to school, she would say that it’s because she likes the people and the new opportunities that come each day. When I asked her what makes her come to school? Alesha had this to say.

“I think I said before it’s because my parents and my sister would have busted my tail. and I can’t afford that.”

Alesha’s response to this question is basically saying how she is family motivated, as in her family motivates her to go to school because she doesn’t want them to get upset.

I asked Alesha how she balances school, home, and clubs.

“To be honest, I don’t even know myself, I don’t even know. When I go home, I know I’m finishing homework around 10, 11. then I’m showering and eating and then I go to bed, I wake up around five, I..I head I have to drop my brother off first and like head out, school myself.
So I don’t really know how I’m able to balance it.”

Alesha doesn’t even know how she’s able to do the things she does, she’s just able to do it naturally all on her own

“I don’t know, really, because when I come to school you see me doing homework when I go home, I’m doing homework, I study a little bit. But like in general, I really don’t know how I have the time for it or do it.”
