Mission Statement
“Our mission is to ensure that everyone’s voices are heard. We march and march and storm throughout the halls for our school (Academy for Young Writers). We work with the community for the community.” -The Writers Weekly Staff 2022-23’
Purpose
The Writers Weekly is the student run school newspaper at The Academy for Young Writers. Its main purpose is to serve as a public forum for free expression of student opinion. The Writers Weekly serves to give voice to the student body through publications that seek to inform and spotlight the student experience at the Academy for Young Writers. Content on the Writers Weekly can range from school events and celebrations, interviews with students and staff, to controversial community issues. All student journalists on The Writers Weekly are committed to following professional standards of journalism that reflect integrity, responsibility, and truth. All publications in The Writers Weekly will strive to represent a balanced and diverse perspective on all matters and will not under any circumstances commit libel, copyright infringement, or violate the privacy of any individual. The Writers Weekly will remain free of any influence or pressure from school administrators including prior review and censorship to ensure that student journalists are able to fully exercise their constitutional rights to freedom of expression as outlined in the First Amendment.
Procedures and Policies
- Student journalists will be free to choose and write on any topics of their interest and will not require any prior approval from editors or advisor
- The staff advisor working with student editors will review and edit all articles prior to publication
- Student journalists will maintain professionalism and respect when interviewing individuals in the school community and be transparent about the purpose and use of the interview in the article.
- Student journalists will not discriminate against anyone on the basis of race, sexual orientation, religion, gender, age, or disabilities.
