The Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution X Shibuya Incident movie released in Japan on November 7, 2025, with a worldwide release scheduled for December 5, 2025.
The movie is set to recap major events from the anime’s latest season and adapt new material from the short Execution Arc based on Gege Akutami’s manga series, which follows Yuta Okkotsu’s mission to execute Yuji Itadori as punishment for the events during the Shibuya Incident. Shibuya was turned into a violent blood bath between sorcerers and curses, resulting in devastating losses that ultimately caused a great shift in the current state of the jujutsu world.
The movie is directed by Sunghoo Park. According to promotional material, it is expected to deliver new dynamic fights, emotional scenes, and move the story in an entirely new direction, giving fans a sneak peek into what season 3 has in store for the future of Jujutsu Kaisen which is expected in early 2026. But now the question is, will the movie live up to the hype?
Before the movie’s release, fans of Jujutsu Kaisen seem both excited but also cautious. We spoke with Harry Perez and Rameek Greene, seniors at Academy for Young Writers, to get their take on the upcoming film.
Harry seemed excited about the release but tempered his expectations of it slightly since the movie recaps content fans have already seen in the anime. “I’m excited, but I’m not expecting too much since it’s mostly stuff we’ve already watched,” Harry said. “I’m looking forward to the new fights, though. I probably won’t see it in theaters, but I’ll watch it when it hits streaming platforms.”
Rameek seemed more focused on the movie’s story. “I think JJK has a better story than Demon Slayer, but I don’t expect it to top Mugen Train or Infinity Castle in terms of animation,” he said. “I’m still excited to see how they adapt the manga. I’ll watch it when it releases on streaming platforms.”
Following the release of the Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution X Shibuya Incident, the movie was able to meet some fan expectations and falling short in others. While many, like Harry Perez and Rameek Greene, tempered their excitement, expecting a recap of the previous season, the film was able to keep some things fresh with some new content and two new exciting fights.
Ethan Deliotte, my 17-year-old cousin, hoping for more progression in the story following the Shibuya arc, enjoyed the new direction into what’s to come. “I think the movie wasn’t bad,” he said. “I had hoped it wouldn’t be a recap of everything, and it wasn’t for the most part, so I was fine with how it went.” However, the recap being a major focus of the movie left some fans, including Ethan, hesitant to recommend others to see it in theaters.
“It got me a little excited for what’s next… [But] honestly, I would not recommend people to see it in theaters,” he said. “I’d probably just wait till the season came out, ’cause why pay $23 when you’d see everything you’ve already seen again and a little bit of what’s coming?”
While the movie didn’t necessarily exceed expectations, it did fulfill its promise of building anticipation for the future. For fans already caught up, waiting for the series to continue may feel like the better option, but if you’re new to the series, this experience would be one you’d enjoy.
I, personally, enjoyed what the movie delivered in terms of what’s new. The fights were flashy, dynamic, thrilling, hyped, and a top tier adaptation of the Manga.
The recap, though covering familiar content, was a great refresher and well organized for fans, old and new, to comprehend what occurred prior. It allows the audience to understand what was at stake and to truly feel the gravity of our character’s situation which develops a deep engagement with the audience I can appreciate.
